Animal lovers celebrate World Animal Day

People all over the world celebrate animals on October 4 each year, which has been designated World Animal Day, The Boston Globe reports. The day was started in Florence, Italy in 1931 by ecologists gathering for a convention.

Origininally designed to raise awareness and draw attention to endangered species or those that are threatened, World Animal Day has since expanded to be a time to reflect on all the animals that co-exist with humans, the news source reports.

According to the World Animal Day website, October 4 was chosen as the day on which to celebrate animals because it is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It aims to celebrate animal life in all its forms and celebrate humankind's relationship with the other creatures on the earth. It is also a time to acknowledge the diverse roles that animals play in human life and to appreciate the way in which they enrich it.

The World Animal Day website launched in 2003 and is designed to help people organize and join in on events in celebration of the day. It encourages people to take advantage of the time to commemorate their love and respect for animals.
