Animal rescue enthusiasts head out to Bark in the Park

It's almost summer, which means most pet owners have been taking their happy hounds for a walk or run outdoors.

Now, one event in Winter Haven, Florida is helping pooches and their parents spend some fun in the sun together. Bark in the Park, which debuted in September 2008 and has had a strong following ever since, will feature canine vendors and exhibitions, as well as opportunities to adopt animal rescue dogs, according to The Ledger.

"It's a whole lot of fun,'' Lisa Baker, executive director of the Humane Society of Polk County, told the news outlet."If you're looking for a pet, this will be a good opportunity."

The highlight of the event will be the third annual Weiner Dog Race, where scores of dachshunds will compete against one another. Last year the match saw over 70 competitors, but the news source reports that double the amount of dogs have already registered this year.

Bark in the Park is being sponsored by Main Street Winter Haven, Inc. a non-profit organization that aims to attract more people to downtown Winter Haven.
