Baller donkeys take the court

To play donkey basketball, or not to play donkey basketball? That is the question being debated by school officials, a local business owner and an animal rights activists in Snohomish, Washington.

On Wednesday night, eight donkeys saddled with basketball players took the court for a game of hoops to raise money for the senior class of Snohomish High School, reports.

The donkeys were trained by Bruce Wick, the owner of Donkey Sports, to follow the basketball up and down the court, making for a stampede of jump shots and fast breaks.

Although the annual fundraiser drew protests from animal rights activists, who claim that the donkeys can suffer injury as their forced into an unnatural activity, Wick says that the game is completely safe, and actually stimulating, for his animals.

"They're pretty intelligent animals, and if they're sitting around in the small pen or stall all day, they're fighting boredom all that time," Wick told the news source.

He added, "When I back into the corral, they're all fighting to see who gets to go [play basketball]."

Donkeys may make superb athletes and teammates as they can use their ears as a form of visual communication, according to Young People's Trust for the Environment.ADNFCR-2796-ID-19711685-ADNFCR
