Dog owners celebrate canine birthdays with huge, elaborate shindigs

In New York City, canines are celebrating their birthdays in style.

According to Reuters, dog owners such as Jessica Winston, a media buyer and owner of a 3-year-old Bichon Frise, are lavishing their pets with birthday parties that include homemade "pup cakes," birthday hats, gift bags that include doggie Snuggies and princess-themed parties complete with tiaras for dogs.

This trend of pampering pets has led to new companies offering a variety of festive dog-related services.

Betty Wong, who owns Pawtisserie, a dog bakery in Brooklyn, told the news source that she originally wanted to give her pup, Buttercup, healthier eating options. Since then, demand at her store has grown.

"We've seen a rise in the number of birthday cake orders during the past few years, and the numbers are steadily growing,” she told the news outlet.

To assist in preparing dog parties, Dorothy Moore is a dog party planner who also owns The Dining Dog Cafe in Edmonds, Washington. Moore says that she organized about 100 dog parties last year, where some fancy soirees consist of white tablecloths, chandeliers, and even rented limos for dogs and their canine guests.

According to a 2006 Gallup poll, about 45 percent of Americans own a dog. The organization also reports that 29 percent of the country has a cat under their roof.
