Donations help animal rescue shelters

Donations can come in the form of financial aid or items such as towels and cans. All of these things help animal rescue shelters, according to a new report from the Commercial Appeal.

"One of our primary goals is the recycling of lives," Matt Pepper, the administrator of the Memphis Animal Shelter, told the news source. "We have these animals, just like these products that get discarded by members of the community, and it's our job and our responsibility to try to re-home them."

The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County, in its effort to use unusual donations to help animal rescue services, has a recycling program that takes in cans and baby bottles, recycles them and uses the proceeds for food purchases.

One animal rescue worker estimates that 33 cans is enough to help provide four-days worth of food for a dog of medium weight.

There are more than 77 million households dogs in America, according to the Humane Society. However, many more are awaiting adoption at a local animal rescue shelter.
