Paula Joyner, the CEO and president of East Mississippi Animal Rescue
, has filled her position for the last 7 years, during which time she has devoted herself, her time, as well as her home to saving animals, according to a new report from WTOK.com.
"My backyard, my life, just everything. It goes O.K. with the family sometimes, but sometimes they don't like it," Joyner told the news source.
However, Joyner - who has turned her house and garage into animal shelters, and has converted her backyard into fenced-in spaces for animals - is an inspiration to her daughter, Kayser Joyner. Kayser plans to pursue a master's in social work, partly because of her mother's work with animal rescue.
About 77.5 million dogs have homes in the U.S., compared to about 93.6 million cats, according to the Humane Society. However, many animals are still being euthanized due to lack of space in animal shelters. More than 73,000 animals are euthanized in Mississippi each year, a signal that much more work needs to be done to save animals
