Firefighters perform courageous animal rescue

As flood waters rose in Edmond, Oklahoma, Lacie Smith was left with a tough decision - help herself or risk her life to save three horses? Luckily, firefighters arrived on the scene to execute a harrowing animal rescue, The Edmond Sun reports.

Smith, along with another animal welfare officer, was trying to rescue the horses when the sudden rise in water forced them to consider their options. It was then that one horse became spooked and jumped into the rising flood waters, and was swept downstream.

"You could tell she was fighting, but that current was strong out there," Smith told the news source.

Thankfully, animal rescue workers were able to get to the animal, which had been found alive about a mile downstream.

The horses were taken to a local equine care facility in town to be examined and cared for.

During natural disaster emergencies, it is recommended to have a plan set in place on what to do with your pet if you have to evacuate your property. Many animal shelters offer boarding services if owners are unable to take their companion with them.ADNFCR-2796-ID-19842237-ADNFCR
