Halloween dog festival benefits animal rescue shelter

It's safe to say that one of the most exciting holidays for pet parents may be Halloween. The occasion gives people a chance to dress up their pooches and parade them around town.

A group of dog owners came out to celebrate the impending holiday while showing off their pet's best costumes at the sixth annual Woofstock event in downtown Mobile, Alabama, reports. And, it turns out the fun-filled day was all for a great cause - to raise money for the city's Animal Rescue Foundation.

One of the pooches present at the event was Rocket, a retired Greyhound. Amy Lee of Spanish Fort adopted the adorable dog in Florida.

"He only won one race, so he was retired early," she told the news outlet.

Last year 5,000 people attended the event, which raised more than $57,000 for the shelter.

While Halloween is certainly a fun time, experts recommend that people keep their pet's safety in mind. Dog owners should be make sure to keep candy out of their animal's reach, and also be careful when opening up the door for trick-or-treaters.
