Katherine Heigl spearheads adoption program in L.A.

Actress Katherine Heigl recently created a foundation dedicated to helping animals in need and is now aiming to get 5,000 animals adopted from shelters this month, People Magazine reports.

The new pet adoption inititative, called Fall 5000, is led by the Los Angeles Animal Alliance and the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which she founded in honor of her late brother.

Heigl kicked off this month's campaign with a press conference on November 4 at the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys, California. At the conference, she also announced that her foundation would be sponsoring no-cost adoptions for veterans through its Pets to Patriots program, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

This month's initiative spans five counties and 20 shelters, and Heigl is tweeting in order to get the word out to Los Angeles-area residents for adoption. She already owns six canine companions with husband Josh Kelley and daughter Naleigh, and is considering getting a seventh this month.

It is also a good time for animal lovers to donate or volunteer at their local shelters across the U.S. in honor of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
