Meredith Vieira lends her star quality to Hounds on the Sound

More than a thousand pet owners gathered in Glen Park in New Rochelle, New York earlier this month for Hounds on the Sound, the New Rochelle Patch reports.

The event, which brings pets and their owners together every year for a picturesque walk and a day filled with fun activities, benefits the New Rochelle Humane Society and Larchmont's Pet Rescue.

"All the money raised is divided 50-50 between our two groups," Dianne Heim of the New Rochelle Humane Society told the news outlet.

One of the most notable speakers at the festivities was none other than Today Show host Meredith Vieira. The television personality spoke about how her local Humane Society helped take care of her dog and cat when they were injured in separate accidents.

"I should actually have [them] on speed dial," the news source reports Vieira telling the audience during the opening ceremony.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, between three and four million dogs and cats are euthanized by shelters every year.
