officials performed a raid on a property in Missouri, where they saved 15 canines from a suspected dog fighting ring, The Springfield News-Leader
After a seven month investigation, authorities made their move, arresting two men and charging them with illegal dogfighting.
Animal rescue workers seized seven adult pit bulls and eight puppies. Many of the adults were found attached to a large log with thick collars and heavy chains.
"We are committed to working with law enforcement to eliminate the brutal and illegal dogfighting activities throughout Missouri," Debbie Hill, vice president of operations for the Humane Society of Missouri, told the news provider.
The local animal shelter hopes to be able to put these pooches up for adoption once they have been examined and in better health.
The ASPCA reports that dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states, and is considered a felony crime in 48. Also, by being a spectator of a dog fight, individuals may be charged with a felony as well. Congress passed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act in 2007, making it a federal offense, which can result in multiple fines and jail time for those prosecuted for dog fighting and related activities.
