Puppy mill dog making strides after harrowing experience

At first glance, it may be difficult to tell that Charlie, a 5-year-old Bichon Frise, has led quite the harrowing existence. The canine was rescued, along with 850 other pooches, from a Missouri puppy mill this past Halloween, reports.

Charlie is now living with foster pet parents Lorry and Richard Schlick, who have cared for more than 50 animals throughout the years.

"Right now, he won't sit in a chair with humans because he's scared of the chair, but pick him up while standing, and he's fine," Lorry told the news outlet. "He's really not comfortable at all with the human touch yet."

Missouri was formerly home to the most puppy mills in the country. However, the state recently passed Proposition B, which has led to extremely tight restrictions on breeders.

Animal rescue activists implore those who are looking to add a furry friend to their family to adopt from a shelter rather than buying from a pet store. This alone will hopefully abolish the existence of puppy mills for good.
