Real life Lassie saves family from burning home

Most dog owners would do anything to save their beloved pooch from harm. What we often don't realize is that our canines would do the same for us, too.

That's just what happened when Ben Heinrichs, who lives with his mom and dad in a desolate and wooded area in Alaska, unintentionally set off a fire in the home's shed. Narrowly escaping the flames, he told his dog, Buddy, they needed help.

It wasn't long before the German Shepherd made a run for it. Buddy was able to flag down state trooper Terrence Shanagin, and the determined dog led the way as the policeman followed him in his car.

"Buddy's valiant actions saved Trooper Shanigan valuable time in responding to the fire," Alaska State Police Director Audie Holloway told the Daily News. "Buddy's pluckiness is a bright spot among an otherwise tragic event for the Heinrichs family."

Heinrich's workshop and shed were badly burned by the accident, but his family's home was spared. It looks like Buddy deserves a special treat!
