Room To Read helps teen mother stay in school

Beauty and her daughterSeventeen-year-old Beauty Njobvu lives in the Mukunku Village of Zambia’s Chongwe district. After facing both personal and academic struggles, Beauty enrolled in Room to Read's Girls' Education Program in 2008, hoping to gain the school and life-skills she needed to get her life back on track.

While Beauty excelled in the program, she became pregnant in early 2010. Most girls in Zambia leave school when this happens. The Ministry of  Education reports that the teen pregnancy rate continues to rise as does early marriages for school-going girls that effectively end their educations.

Relying on the lessons learned from her teachers and mentors, Beauty decided to stay in school, asking her grandmother to help take care of her new daughter so that she pursue an education

Successfully passing her Grade 9 national exams, Beauty started the 10th grade in January 2011. After finishing secondary school, she plans to enroll in college to become a nurse.

Today, Beauty tries to provide her peers with the same kind of support that she received from the Girls' Education Program. She talks with other pregnant teens about staying in school and making healthy, positive decisions, both for themselves and their children.

This young woman credits Room to Read with providing her with the confidence, life-skills, and coping mechanisms that she needs to stay in school and pass her exams. supports Room To Read's efforts to improve the lives of girls like Beauty around the world through contributions from The Literacy Site and Gifts That Give More.
