The dog says: Tweet, tweet

A new product by Mattel is likely to garner praise from the puppy with a lot on his mind and collect cat calls from jealous felines.

Puppy Tweet, a device that attaches to a dog's collar, tracks the sounds, motions and actions of the pet and reports the information on Twitter in one of about 500 pre-written endearing tweets, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The tweets are sent wirelessly from the collar to a USB receiver which is plugged in to the pet owner's computer.

If the dog barks, his Twitter page may say "I bark because I miss you. There I said it. Now hurry home."

The device can be set at timed intervals to assure that a particularly active or noisy dog is not constantly tweeting.

Mattel Brands President Neil Friedman told the news source, "This is a new frontier for us. We think it could be the start of a new wave of products for people to interact with their pets."

A Pew poll at the end of January revealed that about 20 percent of internet users have signed up for Twitter, but Puppy Tweet will be the first opportunity for introspective dogs to share their thoughts when the product is released this fall.
