Wisconsin PetSmart store builds adoption facility

The PetSmart in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin recently got a new addition, one that will hopefully ease the burden of the Bay Area Humane Society.

The pet supply store added a 1,900-square-foot pet adoption facility behind its retail space that will house animals from the local shelter, Fox 11 News reports.

Bay Area Humane Society staff members will run the new facility, which will keep about 30 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens at one time. There are kennels, play areas, and meet-and-greet areas where prospective adopters can visit with the animals.

PetSmart Charities funded the construction of the new facility. This charity seeks to improve the quality of life for pets by supporting and creating programs that rescue homeless animals and encourage healthy relationships between pets and owners, according to its website. PetSmart Charities has funded projects by animal welfare organizations nationwide. The PetSmart adoption facility in Ashwaubenon follows the construction of similar projects in Texas, Arizona and Delaware.

PetSmart Charities also offers an online adoption searching tool that matches prospective owners with the type of pet they are looking to adopt at local shelters.
