Wolf hunting season brings issues

The second season of Montana wolf hunting in the 21st century will begin this Saturday, after several years of heated debate over the species' status as endangered, threatened and plentiful, The Kaimin reports.

After being delisted from the Endangered Species list in 2009, they were added back in 2010. This year, Congress lifted federal protections on the animal, in Montana and Idaho, as well as parts of Oregon, Utah and Washington, the news source reports.

The wolves will be allowed to be hunted down to the levels necessary to keep them off the list, but their growth as a species may help other species thrive. According to, recent research suggests that the revival of wolves will actually help the Canada lynx make a comeback.

The lynx has been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to the reduction of its main source of food - snowshoe hares, according to the study, which was published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin. The hares have disappeared because the coyote population has gone unchecked due to the absence of wolves, their predators, the study suggests. Therefore, bringing wolves back may bring back the hares that allow the lynxes to survive.
