How I named Stucky

One day when i went to the store, I heard a cat meowing. After searching for the sound, I finally located the cat high in a tree. I went to the base of the tree and began talking the cat down. Before it was done, I had quite a large audience, and everyone, including myself was amazed, because no matter what i said, the cat did, exactly as if he understood every word i spoke to him. When he became frightened and turned to go back up I said "no you can't get down that way, you must turn around and keep working down". the cat stopped, turned back around and continued working his way down. when he jumped to another branch, i told him he needed to go back to the main branch and keep coming. he did. When he was finally in my arms, I asked who he belonged to...everyone, without hesitation told me to take him home, so I did. Since I found him stuck up in a tree, I named him Stuck Up, or Stucky for short.

Chester

I was at the pound, a kill shelter at 4:30 pm and they closed at 5 pm. Every time I walked around the corner, I heard this big ol tail hitting the wall, bang, bang, bang. This big ol overweight chocolate lab was just so happy to see me. I found out he was going to be put down after they closed that day. So I adopted him, named him Chester and brought him home. This was in 1999. I found out why he proably was at the pound, he didn't retrieve, he would watch the ball go past him, and he'd look as if he was saying, "Lady you dropped your ball!" He loved cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits, pheasants. I was in an abusive relationship, and in 2003, I loaded up my computer, a Hefty trash bag of clothing in my car. I looked over, and there sat Chester, trembling. So I called him over, he jumped in the car, and we drove off. We lived in an extended stay hotel for awhile, an apartment for awhile, moved 800 miles away, and finally bought a house. It was Chester and I for over 10 years. He was my best friend, he never complained, he just wanted to be with me. Five years ago, he began having trouble walking. He was too big for me to help much. The vet said he had nerve damage in all four feet. finally he couldn't walk anymore, and I had to put him down. I have two dogs now, a shih tzu and a goldendoodle puppy. And I love them both. But Chester and I were such good pair. I miss him still.

When An Animal Choose's You

Everyone was talking about this little dog that wandered the streets. He was seen all over this town going to and from. He had a pattern of when and where he went everyday.People would say that he had been doing this for over a year. He didn't belong to anybody nor would he let anyone close to him.I guess people would leave food out for him, but still no one could get remotely close to him.I got to noticing him sitting out at the very edge of my yard and watching the house. He would see my dogs come out and go in.I took them with me when i went somewhere. So he would see them get in the car and out when i came home.He took a fancy to Brutis and would come up to the house an scuffle with him with me sitting on the porch. They would come up around me but i never offered to touch him.It was very hot out and i would leave water and food out for him. This went on for a couple of weeks, then one evening a storm came up and he was out in the yard sitting and watching. I took a rug out and put under the car for him to get on out from the storm. He watched me and i told him it was his bed. Went back in the house and the rain was starting the wind was getting up.I heard a noise at the front door and he was standing with his paws up on the door looking in.I opened the door an ask him if he wanted in and he just looked at me, not to sure what to do i assume.Brutis went out on the porch and he followed Brutis in the house, fell down on his back as if to say please can i stay.He had chose me to be his new master. And the next day when it come time to get a bath, well Master i was. He's very protective of me with people, loves to play ball and very smart. I named him Spud

What Lola wants Lola gets!

My daughter was home for Thanksgiving two years ago and was driving through town when she spotted a pitiful sight. A dog so thin her hip bones were breaking through the skin. Half of her ears had been crudely cut off but she also, saw a sweet soul and wanted to help give her a chance. She had to take her 40 miles to a vet that was opened cause all here were closed for the long holiday weekend. I figured they would put her down but they did tests (she was full of several kinds of worms and was HW positive) and did all they could being she was so weak. Well, being she was in such bad shape the decision was made to keep her here plus she needed to make many trips to the vets. So there was the tasks to figure out a name. I looked into those soulful eyes and said Lola cause whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. She deserves that with what she has been through. My husband was homebound at the time recuperating from a severe stroke. The two of them bonded and helped each other in the healing process. I have never seen him so gaga over a dog. He adores her and she him. He feeds her and takes care of her, something he has never done before. She is 40+ pounds heavier now and HW negative finally. She is such a joy and loves everyone, even our cats. We of course, decided she was going to be ours. The original plan was to get her in good shape and put her in a bully no kill rescue in the Houston area. My daughter is a foster person there.

Needless to say Lola is still getting everything she wants and then some. This pic was taken in Houston by a photographer during a bully rescue promotion event. She has made our lives better and she shows us everyday that she appreciates us not giving up on her.

My Special Surprise!

One morning I was on the way to take my husband to work. When we were stepping down the steps we noticed something small and wet on the bottom step. Once we got close to find out what it was, we found out it was a new born kitten. Still wet and the cord was still very long. I left it there for about 20 to 30 minutes because I thought we might have scared the mother into the bushes. Well she never came back, and I seen ants starting to go around it, so, I couldn't just leave the little guy there. I brought him inside, cleaned him up, put him in a LARGE purse and went to Wal-Mart. I really didn't think he was going to make it and I told my husband, well if he makes it I'll find him a good home. Well it's just been a little over a year now and he is a mess. He follows me everywhere, and of course I couldn't find him a home. I had grown way to attached to him, so my little Tiger is here to stay. Its amazing how these little things in life can bring you such life long wonderful memories.

Three abandoned geeks

I was living with a friend in an apartment complex where a lot of people would leave their pets when they moved. One morning I was awoken by the cutest meow-squeaks. My roommate spent the next week getting the kittens and their mom comfortable with him. Then the notice came. The complex was calling the county to have all abandoned and feral cats picked up and taken away, after a quick check I found the kittens would be considered feral (being born in the crawlspace meant there were considered born in the wild), and would therefore be put down. The roommate got all the kittens, but not the mom to be willing to move into the apartment with us. We watched the girls over the next couple of weeks, with plans to give them to a no kill shelter, but had to wait until there were just a bit older (8 weeks). We fell in love with the girls, and started commenting on their personalities, and quirks. One mothered her sisters, so she was named after a character from a book, Sephrenia, as the character is commonly referred to in the series as "Little Mother", one was always on the hunt and was a rather good huntress except never killed her prey, so I went with Mara Jade Skywalker, the third my friend named after Terra Brandford. I have joked about how we had a book, a comic, and a video game all came from the same mom.

A Long Wait For Brutis

I adopted Brutis from Project Hope alittle over a year ago.I watch their adoption list and kept seeing this dog they called Brutis. He is adorable with such strange markings but yet no one would adopt him.Months went by and still there he was still there.I had noticed my Charlie wasn't as active as he use to be so i thought just maybe if he had a play mate to scuffle with he would get more active.Brutis had been there for a year and it was time he had a home.Charlie had some neck surgery so i had to put it off a few weeks for his safety. So i did the app thing and went to meet Brutis. He was so scared and timed in there. I told him i would be back and a few days later i got the green light to go get him.I bought him home to meet his new brothers. He seems relieved but still a little nervous which was to be expected. The potty breaking was tuff but we managed. Before long he was settled in and he would scuffle with Charlie. He would sleep by my bed and check on me when i was sick. I knew then he had found his new master. He's finally grown some and is comfortable and happy. He is a momma's boy.

There are so many out there like Brutis that will love their new masters unconditionally if given a chance.

Miley's Story

The first day I laid eyes on my Miley, was the day she was brought into my work (a humane society) and she was about two weeks old. A family had brought her and her siblings in, claiming the mother had left them behind and they were all infested with fleas. This was quite common for the time of the year. Since our funding was almost non-existent at the time, we each had to take turns in fostering and caring for any litter that was too young to stay at the shelter over night. I took this litter of four kittens home with me.

I got up every two hours, sometimes every other; and I bottle fed them each and kept them warm. Unfortunately, one by one the youngest three passed. The one that did live, was my Miley. She was scheduled to stay with me until she was older and could be brought back to the shelter when she was adoptable. Our shelter was old and was in need of being renovated but the funds were not there. Keeping a young weak animal there was just asking for disease to take control. We did our best with cleaning but it was just very hard with little space and little resources. Separating the sick from the healthy was almost impossible.

So with that in mind, I kept her for as long as I could. I did not want to see her catch something and pass from it. When it came her time to be adopted out, I couldn't let her go. I wound up adopting her and will never regret it. She has the best personality. My boyfriend always jokes with me, "she is definitely YOUR cat." She is so good with my son and is such a good cat. I love her to pieces.

This September will mark the fourth year she has been with me and I can only hope for many more to come! :)

A Dog For Mom

Mom lived with my grandpa Charlie, grandpa passed, mom was then all alone and alittle bit scared to be alone. I thought she needed a companion to keep her company and ease her fears. So i went searching at shelters, i come across this one that was so quiet and looked so lonesome sitting on his pallet. He never made a sound or come up as i walked through, but he did look up at me and i knew he was the one.Of all them begging, his eyes said it all.I adopted Aka(stinker). He was to go to grampa"s home so i told them then, he looks like a Charlie so that is his name.At first he and mom didn't hit it off well. She was afraid she couldn't handle him, so he lived with me.Never had an accident on the floor, bladder like a camel (lol). He never barked until he was around my poodles long enough that when i came home they all greeted me with their happy wales that moms home.Charlie is a loving dog and so very well behaved. He has excepted each new addition i have bought home.Mom just loves Charlie now,but i can't bear to leave him with her, he is my baby now.I often think about what terrible times he had when he was on the street. He is scared to death of storms, but a towel to hide under helps alot. It's been since 2008 and we're growing old together.
