In was four days after the new year, in Phoenix, Arizona. People think of Phoenix as a furnace, but in the winter this desert region is cold, and for the last few days we'd had freezing temperatures every night. As we drove downtown we spotted him. A brown dog with his tail between his legs, running in a panic in the road. We quickly pulled right into an empty parking lot as he ran out to the sidewalk. I was about to jump from my car and go after him when he ran back into the five lane intersection. My husband pulled the car out into the road again, and somehow we were right next to him. Throwing open the door wide, we called for him to come inside and he did! He curled up in my seat and drove to our home shaking like a leaf.

That was the day Oscar joined our family, and in so many ways I know we were the lucky ones.
