September 2012 – On the way to San Antonio from Illinois, we stopped overnight in Oklahoma. Arriving at our hotel fairly early we decided to go to the local mall to stretch our legs. When we got to the mall a small black and tan puppy was running around the parking lot searching for something. I hate seeing loose dogs and contacted the mall patrol and they wouldn’t do anything. We finally caught the dog and were trying to find a shelter or vet that we could take her to when we heard someone whistling. We tracked him down and the dog was his! What a relief! Her name was Charlie and we went on our way with lighter hearts.

The next day on the road my husband and I were discussing the dog and he said, “We don’t need another dog do we?” Aargh! I whipped out my phone and showed him pictures of a dog that I had been watching on a rescue site through Facebook, a little black and white female that was estimated to be six months old. The rescue site is hosted by someone in Comanche, Texas, where we’d recently purchased property for our retirement. Unfortunately, the shelter in Comanche is a kill shelter so even though they do a good job trying to find homes for the dogs, they are unable to save all of the animals. After several days of discussion, we decided to stop by and meet the dog. Needless to say we now have more dogs than we should. Charlie is Rat Terrier mix (we think!). She has a strong personality and is very different from the Boston Terriers and Shih Tzus that we have always had. We got her days before she was to be euthanized and she is such a joy.

Please adopt and save a life!
