The Lange Foundation, a no-kill rescue in Los Angeles, called on Easter Sunday. The counselor, Christina, was on the line "We have mom cats and kittens pulled from South Central Shelter. Can you foster?"

I climbed off the elliptical and walked across the gym to talk to my husband. We both agreed, we could foster a feline family in need. When we got to Lange, Christina showed us two families that had just arrived, one Ginger mama with 5 ginger kittens, and one tortoiseshell mama, less than 5 lbs around 10 months old and her three kittens. The tortie looked at me from the cage, rolled sideways and reached out an upside-down paw. Her 4 week old son ran to the litter box and hid.

"Let's take the tortie, her kittens seem shyer and can benefit from the socialization." My husband said. So they were bundled into a carrier and into our car. On the way home we decided to name them after our favorite TV show, Fringe. Olivia, Peter, Walter and Astrid spent the next three weeks in our home office. They arrived malnourished and covered with fleas, even though they'd been at the city shelter for 2 weeks before Lange stepped in. On one of our many visits to the vets, tired and sick with a URI, Olivia fell asleep on my lap, lightly purring. That was when she stole my heart. But, trying to be good fosters, we brought them back to Lange to be adopted out.

We continued our weekly visits to the 100+ cats at Lange. Olivia was a terror in general population. Still mostly a kitten herself, she territorially chased other cats and attacked anyone using the litter box. She was full on tortie-tude. I decided we missed her and it was time to bring her back "home". She's been with us for 2 years now. Olivia is 11 lbs of inventive, loud cat who loves to snuggle just next to me on the couch (and pounce on her sisters.) We're so happy we failed fostering her. Life would be dull without our Olivia.
