My dog had passed away and I wasn't sure I wanted another one because I was traveling for my job at the time. After five months of missing having animals in my home, I decided that I would look into adopting two cats so they could be buddies while I was at work. I went to the shelter in Pittsburgh and walked up and down the aisle, my mind on kittens, not adult cats...but fate had another thing in mind for me. For 12 years these two kitties, who I named Emmett and Neo, were brothers and never spent a night apart until recently, when Emmett passed away suddenly and everything changed for Neo and me. Now, Neo's finding his way without his constant companion and my heart is healing, but the sweet memories of Emmett and his scent remain as a comfort for both of us.
I will always have a place in my heart for shelter animals. I'm not ready for another cat and don't know how Neo would react to a stranger in his home right now, so it may be awhile before I know for certain whether we'll expand our little family. If and when I do, I will definitely look to an older cat who will allow me the same honor of sharing its forever home with me as my beloved Emmett did.
