We rescued our Sammy from the local ASPCA. We went to our Town's first annual Community Day on a Saturday and stopped by the ASPCA booth. After having to put our 2 dogs down a year earlier - who both were 17 years old and 19 years old, we felt it was time to rescue one. That Saturday after leaving the Community Day event we visited the ASPCA. Our hearts broke to see all the dogs and cats wanting and waiting to be adopted. As they had run out of room for dogs, Sammy was in the reception area in a travel crate. My husband took him for a walk and it was instant love and that's when we knew Sammy adopted us. He was emaciated and horribly neglected and abused. The next day on Sunday we picked him up and took him home to start a new life. We learned after we adopted him that he would have been euthanized if he had not been adopted. He had been found roaming the local streets in one town near us. We didn't realize how bad he had been treated until we got him home. It took over a year for us to undo all that had been done to him and also what was not done to him - giving him love. My husband was not working at the time we adopted Sammy so he and Sammy bonded and with my husband's patient hand, was able to get Sammy to trust us. We have Sammy 4 years now this year and he is our love and we are so glad that he made a complete turnaround. We believe he was 2 years old at the time we adopted him making him about 6 years old now. Not sure what kind of dog he was, we searched the internet and learned he could be a chocolate colored German Spaniel. Unfortunately he was just diagnosed with diabetes but we are doing everything we can to give him a great long life. He is spoiled with lots of "babies" and love and attention.
