Feed Dogs Rescued from Illegal Meat Trade

Provide food and medical care for dogs rescued from the meat trade.
Every year, thousands of dogs in Thailand are stolen in the night, packed into trucks, and driven across Laos to Vietnam to be sold for meat to markets and restaurants. Many are treasured family pets rather than strays. Not only is this practice illegal, the way the smugglers treat the dogs is unthinkably cruel.
There is some good news to share. As publicity and opposition to the practice grow in Thailand, where the majority of people do not eat dog meat, the government is taking notice. Many illegal dog shipments have been confiscated before they can cross the border. But the department of livestock, tasked with responsibility for the recovered dogs, has neither budget nor experience in caring for large numbers of dogs. The livestock centers where the rescued dogs are housed are overcrowded, and lack food and veterinary assistance.
Soi Dog Foundation is working hard to make a real difference for these dogs. They are providing vital resources, including dog food, medications, vaccinations, and veterinary teams to care for and spay and neuter the dogs.
You can help. Just $12 provides food and medical care for one dog rescued from the illegal meat trade in Thailand for a month.
Report from the Field
Allison Wexler of GreaterGood.org describes her recent trip to Buriram, Thailand, where a new shelter, home to hundreds of dogs rescued from the meat trade, has been constructed using funds provided through this Gift that Gives More™:
Each one of us was greeted by friendly dogs excited to see new friends. We did not have treats with us, they just wanted company. Even after everything these dogs have been through, they still seek out human companionship. We were all touched by this.
We could have stayed in the shelter playing with dogs all day. Each of us had a favorite or two I miss them already. We're still talking about the one who went and fetched us a leaf to show off.
Soi Dog Foundation is dedicated to reducing the suffering of sick, injured, and abused cats and dogs in Thailand. The organization spays and neuters animals, gives free veterinary care, shelters dogs and cats who are victims of cruelty and abuse, and educates people about animal welfare.
