Prevent the extinction of the magnificent cheetah! Only 7,100 remain!
The majestic cheetah, known for being the world's fastest land animal with speeds up to 75 mph, is now Africa's most endangered cat. A new study led by the Zoological Society of London, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Panthera has revealed that only 7,100 cheetahs remain in the wild. While Cheetahs once ranged across almost the entire African continent and into Asia, today, cheetahs are found in only 9% of their historic range. Zimbabwe alone lost 85% of its cheetahs in a mere 16 years.
With your help, we can ensure the population does not go extinct entirely. While reclassification of cheetahs from "threatened" to "endangered" on the IUCN endangered species list is one step, a whole new approach to conservation is necessary. This means addressing the three biggest threats to cheetahs:
- Habitat loss: 77% of cheetah habitat is unprotected today.
- Human conflict: farmers often kill cheetahs in retaliation for eating their livestock, increasingly common as their natural prey base decreases.
- Illegal wildlife trade: 85% of cubs captured by poachers to sell as exotic pets die after being stolen from their mothers.
We urgently need YOUR help. Your donation will go to Greater Good Charities and can help us protect the cheetahs habitat, work with ranchers, and put a stop to the illegal wildlife trade.
