One September, I was scrolling through a pet page on Facebook for the hell of it. I came across a photo of a ginger mother cat and four kittens. Knowing the rules that they couldn't be rehomed until eight weeks, I advised the poster just in case they didn't know. It was then I learnt that they were trying to find someone to take all five of them in, as their father could no longer look after them.

Mum was a stray that happened to decide his backyard was a perfect place to have her kittens. So many were offering to take the kittens but wouldn't take in mum. My heart absolutely broke - they were 3.5 weeks old and could not be separated from mum!

I knew my husband would object, as we already had two girls at home, but I put my hand up to take them all. I could not allow them to be separated at that age. I picked them up the next day, and my husband found out when he came home that night. Mum I named Adina, which means "gentle", as she was so sweet from the day I got them - even allowing me to pick up her kittens as long as she could see they were fine. The little munchkins grew on me, but Adina stole my heart.

When they were the right age, all the kittens were quickly adopted by fantastic families. Adina I tried to rehome three times, and each time was a complete failure. She turned from a complete smooch to a scaredy cat whenever a potential new owner looked at her. After the third time, I knew she was telling me she was home. And finally my husband caved.

She now asks politely for cuddles, and she's my shadow wherever I go. She's even learning to play properly with her little sister, and her eldest sister is accepting her more every day. Despite costing a small fortune at the vet's for desexing, ear mites, mastitis and fleas, we wouldn't have it any other way.
