America’s veterans, especially those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, need to come home knowing they will be able to find jobs. After courageously serving their country, they shouldn’t have to wonder where their next meal will come from or how they’ll survive. We have a responsibility to help veterans translate their natural talents and skills gained while in service into sustainable, long-term employment.

Senator Patty Murray, Chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, introduced a bill that would help veterans find work and curb the rising unemployment rate among them. Not only would the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011 create a program to assist veterans in transitioning back into the job force, but it would also create a hiring authority that would help veterans return home with jobs waiting for them.

<p>Dear Senator Murray,</p><p>With the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan beginning to return home, now is the time we need to address the growing issue of veteran unemployment. With the former service member unemployment rate at an astonishing 27%, our veterans desperately need our help.</p><p>Our nation's heroes have fought long and hard in the name of keeping our country safe. They've given up their lives to serve America. They shouldn't have to return home to yet another battle — worrying how they are going to survive.</p><p>You introduced the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011 — legislation that would create a program to assist veterans in transitioning back into the job force, but it would also create a hiring authority that would help service members return home with jobs waiting for them.</p><p>Thank you for speaking out on behalf of our veterans.
