Reports from UK laboratories have renewed concern over animal testing linked to the fast-growing weight-loss drug market. Investigations describe monkeys allegedly restrained, force-fed, and subjected to invasive procedures that may cause fear, distress, and prolonged suffering.1,2

Cruelty Cannot Be the Cost of Progress

Animal advocates argue these experiments reveal a system that still permits severe suffering despite modern scientific advances. Non-animal methods such as advanced cell models, organ-on-chip systems, and improved computational tools continue to grow in capability. Yet animals may still endure painful testing while safer alternatives develop.3,4

The UK Must Take Action

To the UK Home Office and the Animals in Science Regulation Unit,

We write to urge immediate action to ban cruel animal testing practices that subject monkeys and other animals to extreme suffering in UK laboratories.

Recent public reports have described monkeys allegedly restrained, force-fed, and used in invasive experiments connected to the development and testing of weight-loss drugs and related products. If accurate, these accounts raise urgent ethical concerns about pain, fear, psychological distress, and prolonged suffering inflicted on intelligent animals.

Monkeys are highly social, emotionally complex beings. They can experience stress, trauma, and fear. They should not be treated as expendable tools in experiments when more humane scientific methods continue to advance.

The United Kingdom has long presented itself as a nation that values animal welfare and scientific leadership. Those values must be reflected in stronger protections now. We respectfully ask that you:

  • Ban testing practices that cause severe suffering to primates and other animals.
  • End the use of animals in experiments tied primarily to commercial demand where humane alternatives exist.
  • Increase funding and regulatory preference for non-animal research methods.
  • Require stronger public transparency regarding licensed experiments, suffering levels, and enforcement actions.
  • Review existing licenses involving primates and suspend any practices causing unnecessary pain or distress.

Scientific progress should never depend on hidden cruelty. Humane innovation is possible and increasingly practical. The UK can lead the world by choosing ethical research standards that protect animals while supporting genuine medical progress.
