Did You Know Maine Has A Longer Coastline Than California?

When most people think of visiting beaches in the United States, they picture California or perhaps Florida. There are other great options along the southern border and East Coast as well, including Maine - a state that often gets overlooked.

As it turns out, Maine has some wonderful coastlines to explore, and many people are surprised to learn that it actually has a longer coast than California!

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California boasts some 840 miles of coastline, while Maine has just 228 miles of coastline. So if that's true, how, exactly, does Maine have a longer coastline?

Well, the general coastline doesn't include inlets or bays. When factoring those in to get a total tidal coastline, Maine boasts a staggering 3,478 miles of coast!

According to the Sunrise Point Inn, there are just three other states that have a longer coastline than Maine: Alaska (coming in at 33,904 miles), Florida (with 8,426 miles), and Louisana (with 7,721 miles).

Naturally, people on TikTok were shocked to discover this.

Some people posted about learning the fact for the first time, while others shared that they'd known it all along!
