Man Rehomes Ex-Girlfriend's Dog She Left At His Apartment
Breaking up is hard on everyone, including any pets that are involved. One man took to Reddit's Am I The A****** forum to see if he was wrong in how he handled his ex-girlfriend leaving her dog behind at his apartment.
The man and a woman called Lexi have known each other since they were 14 and dated for year. When the man broke up with Lexi, she put him in a tough spot.
They lived together in his one-bedroom apartment with Lexi's Welsh Corgi named Elvis. Lexi asked if she could leave the dog at the apartment while she looked for a place to live and the man agreed.
The relationship ended in June but as of October 1st the dog was still living in his apartment even though the man tried countless times to contact Lexi and her family.
He shared, "She asked if I could look after Elvis until she found somewhere to live and I said I would, this was in June. The next week I asked Lexi how her search was going but she left me on read. I thought maybe it wasn't going well and she didn't want to talk about it.
"The week after, I tried to call Lexi but she didn't pick up, I left a voicemail telling her how her dog is doing.
"July rolls around and I've still not heard anything. I messaged Lexi's parents and one of her friends on Facebook and explained that I still have Lexi's dog. No response.
"August time, I try to call Lexi again but she's blocked my number.
"A few times from August to now, I knock on Lexi's parents' house door but no one answers. I slide a note under the door but I still don't hear anything. At this point, I'm feeling very stuck."
He took excellent care of the dog the entire time but knew he was not the best home for the Elvis. When his calls and efforts went unanswered, he took matters into his own hands.
"I started looking for a new home for Elvis, and eventually my aunt offers to have him. She's a SAHM with a husband, and they have two kids aged 10 and 13 who love dogs. She has the time to walk Elvis during the day and they have a large yard which he can play in. They took Elvis home and got him microchipped. I feel like I've done the right thing."
Just when he thought the incident was behind him, Lexi reached out when she saw a photo of Elvis with his new family. She called him a "heartless jerk" for rehoming her dog. He defended himself by saying she was unresponsive and abandoned her dog for months, so he found him a good home.
She told him she was, "having a depressive episode and couldn't talk to me." He feels like he made the right decision and so do other Redditors.
They agreed that she basically abandoned her dog and one person (u/gw2kpro) even said how they would respond to her.
"Hey Lexi, nice to hear from you finally and to see that you finally unblocked my number! Elvis certainly missed you for awhile but he got over it. Unfortunately, I'm starting a depressive episode of my own now, so you'll be blocked on this end until it runs it's course about 5 months from now. Talk to you then!"
