Large Dog Breeds Often Found In Shelters Who Make Great Workout Buddies

Animal shelters are full of bigger dogs due in part to people not having the time or desire to give them the exercise they need. Since January is Healthy Weight Month and Walk Your Dog Month, we decided to celebrate by sharing which dog breeds (many found in shelters) make great fitness partners.

It's a new year which means that most of us are trying to check off one of our resolutions - to lose weight.

Something as simple as taking a daily walk is beneficial to your mental and physical health. The same is true for dogs. Sadly, large dogs are patiently waiting in kennels across the country for a family to take them on walks and give them a loving home.

People who have a workout buddy are more likely to continue exercising and get into a regular routine. While most dogs love walks, some larger breeds have the endurance and drive to help you reach and exceed the suggested 10,000 steps a day.

They will make exercising a breeze and fun.

These lovable muscular dogs enjoy outdoor activities and love to go on hikes. However, one of their favorite activities is cuddling on the couch with their humans.

There is a reason why they are the most popular dog breed...but that doesn't mean they can't be found at shelters. The loyal dogs require about an hour of exercise every day but are willing and able to do much more.

Ready, set, go! Border collies are always ready to go for a walk, run, or play a game of Frisbee. They excel at dog sports and enjoy nothing more than being with their family.

These friendly dogs will keep you moving all year long, even in the cold winter months, and keep you entertained with their vocalizations.

Running, playing, hiking, and herding are a few of this friendly dog's favorite things. They form close bonds with their humans and will go wherever you go.

Known as the fastest dog breed, they will happily run or walk daily with you... at a pace you can keep up with.

Their athletic build and energetic nature means they are always up for an adventure. Long daily walks with a game of fetch thrown in will keep these beautiful dogs and you happy and healthy.

These high-energy and intelligent dogs do best when they have a job to do, like working with police. They also excel as pets with really active people who like to run, hike, and bike.

This is just a small sample of the dog breeds found in shelters who would love to be your personal trainer. Learn about the active dogs at your local shelter and see which one is the right fit for you.

There are countless health benefits to walking 10,000 steps a day and rescuing a shelter dog. Head to your local shelter and find not only your new workout pal but your new best friend. If you are unable to adopt, consider volunteering at your shelter as a dog walker.
