NOVICA Artisan Ingrid Garcia
Ingrid Garcia
I'm a creative, passionate and hardworking woman who works with textiles. I was born in 1987 in the State of Mexico. I've always had a liking for fabrics, especially our traditional weaving arts. I want to make them available in modern designs for everyday use. My handbags and accessories showcase textiles by artisan families who are expert weavers with a real passion for this craft.
My mother began teaching me to sew when I was a young girl, just as her mother taught her. Sewing is a tradition in our family, one that I want to preserve. I'm currently teaching workshops for children and other people who want to learn an occupation they can practice at home and generate an income.
"When I finally decided to take up handicrafts, it was a difficult decision. It meant a complete change of career, but I chose what really impassions me because I think that is what's most important.
"Most of my designs use handwoven cotton created in local communities. Through my work, I can express my love for Mexico, our traditions and colors because my inspiration comes from this wonderful country. I want each design to represent a union of old Mexico and modern Mexico.
"Working for myself has been challenging. There are many difficulties to overcome but, with time, you learn to do so. The toughest part for me has been time management and meeting deadlines but working on my own has brought many benefits and satisfactions like expressing my inner thoughts, being as creative as I want and having the freedom to choose.
"Today, my work creates direct and indirect jobs, especially for single moms who can do the sewing at home and earn an income without neglecting their children.
"I want to continue working with Mexican artisans, promoting our culture in the world and making working conditions more dignified. I also want to extend my design collections and encourage artisan work in our communities."
