NOVICA Artisan Nucu Collective

Nucu Collective

“We are the Nucu Collective, natives of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. The Nucu Collective was born from a search for a way to help artisans spread their handicrafts. The economy of the Chiapan artisans, much like their fashion and customs, are distinct from any other region of the country. The collective was visualized for a very marginalized community of artisans.

“Our primary focus is on technique, independent of the piece that we create. For us, technique is the vehicle for the expression of work. We use cedar wood. For us, polishing each detail is very indispensable.

“We began this project with the attention to our clients as the overriding element, focusing on designing what they wanted to see in a sculpture while bringing a focus to our culture and tradition. We want to expand and transmit the importance of quality, expression, value, and fascination with a touch of tradition.

“We are a collective of various artisans dedicated to woodcarving; we are one of the few generations who have taken up this tradition. We want to strengthen our business with the help of NOVICA. The majority of us have learned from the tutelage of our parents; from childhood we grew up among cedar trees. Our greatest inspiration comes from the nature that surrounds us, the same nature that gives us resources to create beautiful pieces.

“As a collective, we want to share our work and introduce what we create. There is a part of each person in what we create. The ability to export our handicrafts through NOVICA touches us greatly.”
