Help save the threatened gopher tortoise before it's too late. Donate NOW to renovate a wildlife sanctuary in need.
This poor gopher tortoise (first image) was found on the side of a busy intersection in Florida. She was immediately transported to South Florida Wildlife Center's hospital, where the clinic staff noticed that she was suffering from multiple abrasions to her front legs, carapace, and dorsal. Her shell was thoroughly cleaned to prevent infection as the wounds were sutured up by the vet techs. Unfortunately, there is not enough information on her original territory for a release. Will you help give this gopher tortoise and many others—the shelter they need?
Gopher tortoises are a keystone species, which means that a lot of other species depend on them for survival. They dig large burrows, ranging from 20 to 30 feet long, which provide shelter to 350 species, including small lizards, insects, burrowing owls, small mammals, and snakes. Gopher tortoises are also, tragically, a threatened species. By protecting the gopher tortoise, we can protect the entire ecosystem that relies on them.
Greater Good Charities' Rescue Rebuild program is preparing for a fantastic project updating the South Florida Wildlife Center, and you can be a part of this renovation! With your help, the team will renovate an existing enclosure to be suitable gopher tortoise rehabilitation—along with finishing their existing squirrel enclosure, building a roof over their shorebird enclosure, and constructing new aviary enclosures for the nursery to benefit smaller and younger birds that can't use the existing enclosure.
These life-changing updates will create safe spaces for a wide variety of species, from the gopher tortoise to the heron to squirrels! Will you help Rescue Rebuild improve the lives of these animals and support the amazing work of the South Florida Wildlife Center? Donate NOW to make a difference by funding this build and future renovations with Rescue Rebuild!
