Michael Mwarua Ali, Chairman of the Mtwapa-Maweni Turtle Conservation project, describes nest translocation as a delicate process where even a slight rotation of an egg can harm the developing embryo. For the people involved, this is far more than a technical exercise. It represents a commitment to giving every egg, and therefore every future turtle, the best possible chance to survive.

Once the eggs are safely removed, the team recreates the nest in a more secure location. They dig a new chamber in the sand, then return each egg in the same sequence and position in which it was found. The nest is covered, marked, and recorded, and the site is monitored until the hatchlings emerge weeks later and begin their journey to the sea. With each relocation, community members quite literally help save a species one egg at a time.
