In this case, a mama dog living in harsh conditions managed to crawl under a fence in search of help for herself and her puppies. The events began when Don Boston, founder of the Abilene Stray Animal Program, was out searching for a different dog entirely. He was looking for an abandoned husky along a dirt road when he happened across another animal in need. He noticed a lone dog wandering by the roadside, clearly hungry and on her own. Her thin frame and searching eyes made it clear she had been fending for herself for too long.

Boston approached the dog and offered her food while he tried to understand her situation. Once she had eaten, she started to walk away, and instead of leaving her, Boston chose to follow at a distance. As he rounded a corner, he realized she had led him straight to her puppies. They were gathered behind a fence on a nearby property, separated from their mother by worn, unsafe barriers that barely contained them.

What Boston saw in that yard alarmed him immediately. The ground was scattered with sharp pieces of metal and debris that created a dangerous environment for any animal. There was no visible food or clean water, and several of the dogs were suffering from flystrike on their ears, a painful condition caused by flies biting and irritating the skin. In a video later shared on Facebook, Boston described the dogs as “hungry, hungry, hungry,” capturing in a few words what their bodies already showed.

The mama dog and two of her puppies had managed to squeeze through a hole in the fence, which explained why Boston had first spotted her alone on the road. The rest of the puppies remained trapped inside the hazardous yard. Faced with a family of dogs living with neglect and inadequate care, Boston felt a strong urge to remove them all from the situation on the spot. Yet he understood that stepping onto private property and taking the dogs could create complications, so he chose to speak with the homeowner first.

Boston later shared that the scene broke his heart. In conversation with The Dodo, he explained that he had to know how these dogs ended up in such conditions. He learned from the property owner that the dogs had originally belonged to the owner’s brother, who had passed away. After the brother’s death, the surviving family member had taken in the mama dog, but had not prevented her from having multiple litters. Over time, the number of puppies grew, and their living environment never improved.

Recognizing that this cycle of repeated litters and ongoing neglect could not continue, Boston felt a responsibility to intervene constructively. “I have to help these guys,” he recalled thinking. He began by focusing on the puppies, reasoning that if he could at least secure safe homes for them, they would have a chance at a healthier life than the one they had known so far. Through patient conversation and advocacy, he convinced the property owner to agree to rehome the puppies.

Once the puppies were surrendered, they were placed with new families where they had secure surroundings, full bowls, fresh water and the care needed to grow into strong, healthy dogs. For young animals that had started life in a yard scattered with sharp metal and hunger, the change represented a complete transformation. The simple things many pets take for granted, such as regular meals and gentle attention, became a daily reality for them.

Boston did not forget the mama dog. Although he could not immediately remove her from the property, he continued to advocate for her wellbeing. He persuaded her owner to allow her to be spayed, recognizing that stopping further pregnancies was essential. Without that step, the dog would likely have continued to have litters in the same environment, repeating the pattern of suffering he had just helped disrupt for her current puppies.

While Boston was in the process of arranging her spay, another twist occurred. Animal control contacted him to let him know that the mama dog had escaped through the fence once again and had been picked up by an officer. This time, when they reached out to her registered owner, they did not receive a response. Under those circumstances, Boston was permitted to foster her. The same determination that had brought her crawling under a fence in search of food and safety had, in a way, finally led her to a lifeline.

With the legal barriers removed, Boston was able to step fully into the role he had wanted from the start, offering the mama dog a place of refuge. Once she is medically cleared, the plan is for her to come home with him so he can give her a comfortable foster environment and begin the search for a permanent family. After surviving hunger, dangerous surroundings and repeated litters, her prospects have shifted toward security and care.

There is a striking contrast between the sharp metal and scarcity of her old yard and the future Boston envisions for her. He explained that he and his team are going to try to give her a happy life, one where her needs are met and her days are no longer defined by neglect.
