Pit Bull Puppies Found With Hair Ties Around Mouths Saved From Cruel Treatment

When a maintenance worker in Wichita, Kansas, entered an apartment to inspect a burst pipe, he had no idea he was about to save two lives. The moment he stepped inside, he was struck by a foul odor and an overwhelming sense that something was wrong. In the corner of the room, he found a small plastic dog crate. Inside were two pit bull mix puppies, just seven months old, huddled together in distress. What stood out most was their silence — a haunting quiet that didn’t match their obvious suffering.

Animal cruelty cases are always heartbreaking, but the details of this one are particularly difficult. According to the Wichita Animal Action League, the puppies were unable to open their mouths. Their noses were swollen and red, and the crate was soiled with urine and feces. The maintenance worker, unwilling to leave the dogs behind, contacted a friend who fosters dogs for the League. That call set off a chain of events that would ultimately rescue the puppies and give them a second chance.
Sarah Coffman, executive director of the Wichita Animal Action League, responded immediately. Alongside animal control officers, she entered the property and secured the puppies, rushing them to a veterinary clinic. What they discovered was both shocking and heartbreaking: tiny rubber hair ties had been wrapped tightly around each puppy’s snout — two bands per dog. Initially mistaken for wire due to how deeply they had cut into the skin, the bands had likely been in place for 12 to 24 hours, the veterinarian estimated.
The removal process was harrowing. As the veterinarian carefully cut the bands with forceps, the puppies screamed in pain. Blood rushed back to their noses, and the trauma of the moment was deeply felt by everyone present. Coffman described the scene as “really quite heartbreaking,” adding that if those bands had remained for just a few more hours, the dogs could have suffered permanent tissue damage or even death.
I found this detail striking: something as seemingly innocuous as a hair tie was used in such a harmful way. It’s a disturbing reminder of how everyday objects can become tools of cruelty in the wrong hands. Fortunately, the puppies — now named Westley and Debbie — are recovering well in a foster home. Their resilience, as Coffman noted, is remarkable. Despite what they endured, they are playful, affectionate, and adapting quickly to their new environment.
Westley, the more adventurous of the pair, is often kept in check by his sister Debbie, who Coffman described as “laid-back” but assertive. Watching their personalities emerge has been a source of joy for their foster family, especially given the trauma they’ve overcome. Their recovery is a testament to both the strength of animals and the impact of timely intervention.
This story also highlights the importance of community in animal rescue. Had it not been for the burst pipe, these puppies might never have been found. Coffman herself reflected on this twist of fate, wondering what would have happened if the maintenance worker hadn’t entered that apartment when he did. “You would never think that you would be thankful for a pipe bursting and flooding an apartment,” she said, “but it literally saved two lives.”
The case has drawn attention not just for its cruelty, but also for the incredible outcome. Applications to adopt Westley and Debbie have already started coming in, and the Wichita Animal Action League is hopeful that they will soon find a loving, permanent home. In the meantime, they continue to receive care, affection, and the chance to simply be puppies again.
For those moved by this story, there are ways to help. Donations to the Wichita Animal Action League support their efforts to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need. And for those considering adoption, Westley and Debbie are just two of many animals looking for a fresh start.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the cruelty that some animals face, but it also shines a light on the compassion that exists within communities. From the observant maintenance worker to the swift actions of rescuers and veterinarians, every step made a difference. And while the trauma these puppies experienced cannot be erased, their future now looks far brighter than their past.
