Half Blind Farm Dog Takes On Bear To Save Her Family

On a rural property in Cordova, New Mexico, a 12-year-old dog named Honey appears to have done what no one would have asked of her. The half-blind farm dog confronted a bear in the night and kept it from reaching the Martinez family’s animals, including more than 60 chickens, two horses, and other dogs.
By morning, Honey was barely breathing in the driveway, but the animals behind her were still safe.
A senior dog faced down a bear in the dark, and lived through the encounter.
Bear attack left Honey with devastating injuries
The family first saw that something was badly wrong when they found Honey gravely injured after the March 3 attack. Her neck had been torn open, and the damage to her face and body was severe.
Signs across the property suggested a fierce struggle. According to KOAT, the family saw scratches on fences and trees, while tracks showed Honey running back and forth near the chicken coops as she tried to keep the predator out.
Protective senior dog stood between danger and the coop
Honey was not a young guard dog at the peak of her strength. She was an older mixed-breed dog who had already survived parvo and a porcupine encounter that left her partly blind.
According to People, Honey was on her usual patrol when a hungry bear came onto the land, likely looking for an easy meal after hibernation. Honey met that threat before it could reach the family’s vulnerable animals.

Urgent veterinary care helped save her life
After emergency treatment, the family turned to Española Humane for ongoing care. Honey needed surgery, medication, and repeated bandage changes as veterinarians worked to stabilize wounds described as catastrophic.

Thanks to Honey's bravery, more than 60 chickens were left unharmed.
Honey returns home after saving the animals she loves
Honey is now recovering at home, back among the animals she protected. Her family has given her a nickname that fits the scale of what happened: Bear Slayer. Yet the story that stays with them is simpler than that.
Honey was an aging dog with every reason to lose that fight. She stepped in anyway, and because she did, the rest of the farm made it through the night.
