Dog Stuck in Trap, Cat Lost After Owner's Death Are Healing, Thanks to You

While many pets enter animal shelters in relatively good health, there are some that are found in dire straits and are rescued just in the nick of time. Thanks in part to your support, one shelter was able to help two pets in such life-threatening circumstances this year.

Florence Area Humane Society (FAHS) in South Carolina received a call this spring about several cats that had been fending for themselves since their elderly owner died in his home. Unfortunately, animal control also became aware of the situation and responded first, lumping the cats in with a community cat program that catches, neuters, and then releases cats back where they were found.

The rescue says, “The cats had only been indoor pets. FAHS, in collaboration with a local cat rescue, set out traps, but only four cats were recovered. Emmet was thin and very terrified. He was vetted immediately and is now in a foster home. He found the tunnel a good place to feel safe as he adjusted to his new life.”

SEND A CARE PACKAGE TO A SHELTER PET

The care Emmet received was made possible as part of your clicks, trivia participation, shopping for a cause, and direct donations. Your support allows us to work with our charitable partner Greater Good Charities to get essential supplies like food, vaccines, and bedding to shelters in need, but also comfort items like toys and tunnels.

Comfort was also necessary for Alice, who was caught in a trap. She’d been there without food or water for two days when she was finally rescued by FAHS and animal control staff. When they examined Alice more closely, though, they realized that being trapped had been the least of her problems.

FAHS says, “As we removed her from the trap, she was visibly injured and could not use one of her front legs. [Animal control] transported her to Florence Animal Hospital, where radiographs displayed that Alice had been shot in the leg, shattering the bone. Unfortunately, the leg could not be saved, and FAHS authorized surgery to remove the leg. Alice is in foster recovering and is now ready for a loving home!”

Your support ensured these pets got out of dangerous situations and are now safe, sound, and recovering. If you’d like to continue to contribute supplies to shelters so they can care for more animals like Emmet and Alice, click below!
