Hundreds of Cats and Dogs Left Behind in War Zones Finally Get Food They Need to Survive
Andrea Powell
The attacks on Ukraine are only increasing in intensity and frequency. Among the rubble are countless cats and dogs trying to survive. Some were left behind when their families evacuated or left orphaned when their owner died.
Courageous and kind people risk their lives in these war zones to care for the animals left behind. However, they need your continued support to do so. Pet food is scarce and your donations help send nutritious food to animals in the hardest-hit areas in Ukraine.

These hungry cats and dogs have full bellies thanks to a delivery of donated pet food. While this helps the animals and caretakers immensely, the need for food is ongoing. Read how your donations made a difference below.
Odesa

A group of six women near Odesa founded the non-profit organization, "On Guard for the Protection of Life", that cares for roughly 80 dogs and 48 cats. In addition to feeding and caring for these animals, they prioritize sterilization to prevent more homeless animals. This year alone, they helped spay and neuter over 200 animals.

Greater Good Charities' partner United for Animals (UFA) who distributes the donated food shared, "every bag of food and every act of support makes a real difference. It gives them the opportunity to continue protecting animals and making their lives safer and better."
Kryvyi Rih

This city called "the longest city in Ukraine" stretches for more than 120 kilometers with numerous village filled with abandoned animals. 24 volunteers remain behind in the war-torn area to feed and care for the innocent animals.

According to UFA, "Every day they feed hungry dogs and cats, provide medical care whenever possible, rescue injured animals, and offer them a chance to survive. Many of these animals were left behind when families were forced to flee their homes. Others were born on the streets, knowing only hardship. Caring for hundreds of animals is not easy. Food is often the biggest challenge, and every delivery makes an enormous difference."
These terrified animals will not have to worry about their next meal, for now. Your donations are making a difference.
Kherson

A city under constant attack is also home to hundreds of abandoned cats and dogs. 14 volunteers risk their lives to feed and care for these animals daily, showing them they are not forgotten.
485 cats and 318 dogs rely on these people to survive. "Each of them has a story: some are still waiting for their former owners by damaged doorways, others have been wounded by shrapnel, and some are just learning to trust humans again. The volunteers work in a state of constant readiness. They do not just feed the animals while risking their own lives under shelling; they also provide first aid to the wounded and actively search for new families in safer regions of Ukraine," states UFA.

They went on to say, "Now that the food supply is secured for a time, they can focus on what matters most: saving lives and treating those who have suffered the most from the war. As long as there are people ready to go out under the sound of cannon fire to fill a food bowl or hug a frightened dog, the heart of this region continues to beat."
Donate today to continue to help feed the hungry cats and dogs in Ukraine. Every dollar helps!
