In August 2012, we lost our 18 year old cat Boris to cancer. I got him from a rescue shelter when he was 6 months old, and he saw me through a painful relationship breakup. My now partner Andy also adored him. We were heartbroken, but it was too soon to adopt again. In late November, we felt it was time, and I'd decided I really wanted a pair of ginger boys.

We found several on rescue sites but were always beaten to it. Then I saw an advertisement for a litter, and although I wasn't sure, Andy persuaded me to go see them.

The litter had consisted of three white kittens and four gingers, and only two of each were left. We had been promised the last two gingers by the lady who'd rescued them. The mother cat's owner had neglected them horribly and threatened to drown them. The vet said he'd never seen such young kittens so badly infested with fleas and mites.

A family visiting at the same time as us had asked for a ginger kitten but were told they'd been reserved. However, Andy picked up a little white kitten for me to see; when it climbed up my sweater to chew the buttons, I was hooked. He picked up the tiniest ginger boy, who immediately fell asleep in his hands. Both of us were smitten! So we had one white and one ginger and the family could also have a ginger kitten.

Austin Cambridge (white) and Morris Oxford (ginger), named after old makes of British cars, have the sweetest natures, and we absolutely adore them.
