For my seventh birthday, my mom took me to the humane society to adopt my first cat. I came home with a beautiful black kitty named Night.

Eleven years later, Night passed away suddenly the night after Christmas. She had been sick, but I thought she would get better. An emergency vet told us her kidneys were shutting down and there was nothing we could do. I was devastated and thought I would never be able to love another kitty in the same way.

It took three years, but I was finally ready to adopt another kitty. As my mom and I went to the humane society, the same one where I had rescued Night years before, I was determined that I would not adopt another black kitty.

When I told the woman who was helping me about Night, she immediately asked, “So, will you be getting another black cat?”

I shook my head.

“That’s too bad,” she said. “Black cats have a really hard time finding a home and are more likely to be put to sleep.”

This broke my heart. As I walked around the shelter, I saw a small black kitty curled up in a kennel. We made eye contact, and she jumped up. We looked at each other through the glass.

When this cat was let out, she practically jumped into my arms. I knew she had chosen me.

My mom and I left Bagheera, as I had named her, at the shelter so she could be spayed. The next day, we came to pick her up.

That night, I was struck by how much I missed Night and felt as if I had betrayed her by adopting another black cat. I began to cry.

Bagheera, who had been sound asleep, woke up and raced to comfort me.

I then knew Night had sent Bagheera to me. Ever since then, Bagheera and I have shared a special bond.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
