Some of the happiest stories have sad beginnings.

In the summer of 2013 (days before my birthday, no less), my cat, who I’d had for 18 years - more than half my life - and who I loved more than anything, got severely ill with no warning. I had to let her go. Devastating isn’t even the word.

I’d never in my life been without a furry friend, so it was less than a month before I caved and found myself at a fantastic local shelter, thinking maybe I’d find a dog this time. There were many awesome dogs, to be sure, but you can't go to a shelter and not check out the kittens; impossible!

In one cage, all by her lonesome, was a little black fluffball who was obviously upset, unaccustomed to her surroundings, and crying fit to break your heart. A sign on the cage requested quiet around her, as she was blind, and a newcomer there.

I had to pick her up and see if I could cheer her up, at the very least, and, of course, she just curled right up against my chest and started purring. And that was that.

I named her Blinkin after the awesome blind character in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights", because I’m awful like that. It really does suit her, though. Of all the animals I’ve had, she has the most personality.

Popcorn is a favorite treat and toy; she goes nuts when she hears it popping in the microwave. Likewise, candy wrappers (especially mini Reese’s peanut butter cups) are a favorite for playing fetch with. And yes, she plays fetch!

For being completely sightless, she is amazingly talented at locating things. She even hunts bugs by hearing! Never a dull moment with her around. Rescue babies are the best.
