My rescue story began on February 13, 2021. It was unseasonably and bitterly cold that night in Arkansas when I got a call from my friend. They had found a mommy dog with two puppies in the ditch by the side of the road. The mommy was frozen, the puppies were barely breathing, and my friend asked me if I would take them.
When they got to my house, I tried to get them to lick some warm milk from my fingers, but they were so frozen! I was afraid that they wouldn't live. One was solid black, and the other was reddish-brown.
Well, I put them on my chest and covered us all with a blanket. Every hour and a half, I got up and offered my fingers with warm milk on them. Around 1:30 am, I lost the little brown one. And finally about 4:30 am, the black puppy started licking my fingers.
I fixed him a little box with a warm towel, and for the first few days, moved him from room to room with me. Then I turned the box on its side and left it in the kitchen. After several hours, he was finally brave enough to follow me around. But he was still afraid and would run as fast as he could when I tried to pick him up and pet him. However, at night, he would creep under the covers and curl up next to me.
I named him Boris, like the Russian spy on the old Bullwinkle and Rocky cartoon, because he just sat and watched everything. Now we are doing leash training and he is ornery and spoiled, but he is my baby and I love him.
