In the stormy October of 2002, a cousin of mine heard faint mewing coming from a storm drain. Inside, she discovered a tiny tortoiseshell kitten who was barely four weeks old. My cousin had basset hounds, so her household was not a safe place for such a vulnerable kitten. I was working full-time and attending graduate school, and I did not think I could take on the responsibility of raising a kitten. Still, I brought her home.

Almost immediately, Cinder gave me a scare. On her first night home, she ate some of her kitty litter, and I had to rush her to the emergency veterinarian. The veterinary team kept her warm and hydrated overnight. By morning, she was doing well, and our regular veterinarian examined her and scheduled her vaccinations and other necessary care.

Cinder has been beside me through so much over the years. She evacuated with me during Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, Gustav and Isaac. Through every frightening storm and major change, she remained my loyal companion. She is the sweetest cat, with just a dash of tortoiseshell sass, and veterinarians have always praised her.

Shortly after a move this summer, Cinder suffered a serious health crisis. I was terrified that I was going to lose her. Thankfully, she recovered from the infection, although we also discovered that she is diabetic.

Despite everything, Cinder is doing amazingly well. I do not think her coat has ever looked shinier or her attitude more cheerful and spirited. She makes me want to be a better person and has taught me how to become a better pet parent, something I am still learning every day.

I love my Cinder!
