One Saturday afternoon in Texas, some friends came over and told me they had been given a little Chihuahua mix puppy who was 10 weeks old. I looked into the box, and there was this puppy who fit in one of my hands. I said I would keep him.

This was what my friends had hoped would happen. They knew that, with everything going on in my life, I needed something to cheer me up. I had just had surgery and found out I had hypoglycemia.
I took him to the pet store with me and had him looked over. It turned out he was only four or five weeks old. As I walked around getting formula and toys, I tried to think of a name for him. I thought of my dad and said, “Colonel?” He turned his head toward me and wagged his tail.

A few months later, I was sick and passed out on the floor the moment I got up. He ran to get my friends and wouldn’t stop barking until they followed him. He saved my life that day.
Almost a year to the day after I passed out, he became a certified service dog. Three months later, I got a teaching job in Egypt, and he came with me. He was so scared at first, but he has become a fixture in my classroom.
He doesn’t always come with me, but he is happy just spending time with me and my new husband, who has been his dad for two months. He enjoys going with us to the park or our shop.
He still tells me when my blood sugar is low, and he loves his bones. Every night, he sleeps either on my feet or at my side. Every morning, he waits until I have my juice before going for his walk. I hope he will be this great with his future little human.
I am so blessed every day to have Colonel in my life to help me get through the day and watch over me. I fell so hard for him two years ago, and he is truly a hero in my eyes.
