My husband called me minutes after leaving the house to ask me to look out for a cat he'd seen on the road. I couldn't see it when I went out, but soon after, my neighbour knocked on my door holding said cat.

"I found your cat," she said, as she must have seen me out looking, but it really did look like our two black cats I knew were already safely indoors.

The cat continued to hang around over the coming weeks, and I tried in vain to find its original owners. We started opening up our conservatory for her to sleep in. I was afraid of taking her in because one of my cats was clearly agitated by her.

As the weeks drew on, we started to notice her mouth was in a really bad way, so we took her to the vet's and were told she would have to have teeth removed.

We finally got her a place in a local cat shelter and they had agreed to pick her up post surgery, but at the last minute, we had a change of heart. Worried she'd feel abandoned again, my husband and I agreed to pay her vet bill and take her in. We decided to name her Connie, as she'd been living in the conservatory for so long, and she is the most loving cat I have ever come across.

After a couple of months, we noticed she drank a lot of water, and the day before we were due to go on holiday for Christmas, I took her to the vet's, worried she didn't seem right. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and rushed on to a drip. I couldn't bear going away and worrying, so I cancelled our holiday and she came home on Christmas Eve seeming a lot better.

Two years on, she's doing really well. The cats all seem fine together now, and she will jump on your lap at any opportunity. I'm so glad we decided to keep her, and don't know what I'd do without her.
