It was a hot, humid summer in Japan when my boyfriend and I were selected to adopt two kittens from a lady that rescued them. When the day came, she suddenly decided we wouldn't be good owners (even though I was a veterinary technician and longed for the day when I could finally afford a cat) and never spoke to us again.
I was heartbroken, I moped for the rest of the day and the next one. Seven years of saving to provide a complete quality of life for a rescue kitten and it just wasn't in my cards. That night I prayed, to whatever is out there - whether God or ominous being - to let me know if this just wasn't the time for me to have a kitten in my life.

The next day, my boyfriend and I decided we should check some of our local pet stores in the hopes of still rescuing. I wasn't 100% on the idea, I still longed for the two happy babies we had planned for months to adopt, but I made the effort just for him.
As we started to drive away, a flash of white caught my eye. A small, baby kitten was sitting in our driveway, quiet as can be and completely alone. No more than 5 weeks old, he was so thin and had fleas and infections with both eyes.

The miracle of finding this little baby, so close to dying alone, the day after we were supposed to pick up our two, perfectly healthy and happy kittens was just absolute destiny. We stared in eye at him, a teenie half-tabby, half white baby and immediately scooped him up.
He battled a lot of things in the beginning: food intolerance, diarrhea, fleas, tapeworms, but eventually he overcame it all and is the picture of health and happiness now.
He's almost 6 months old, and we named him Toby. His FB page: Toby in Japan shows how much he's grown over the months.
