Ember was a feral kitten who had been trapped, spayed, and released at two months old. It was December and freezing. She found her way under a patio where the family could hear her but couldn’t reach her. It took two weeks to coax her out and bring her safely to our shelter.

As a volunteer, I immediately noticed the tiny calico with the tipped ear and knew she’d had a rough start: first trapped, spayed, and released, then trapped again. She was terrified and too aggressive to go onto the adoption floor.

My heart broke for her, and although I needed gloves just to pick her up, I spent hours trying to socialize her so she could find a family.

After six long weeks of being wrapped in a blanket in my arms, she felt safe enough to accept human touch.
And I, of course, couldn’t put her back into a cage. She’s slept on our bed for over three years now.
