Meet Juno, aka Meow-Meow. She came to us at a time when I didn’t want another pet. I had lost my 18-year-old kitty a year earlier, and our 15-year-old Samoyed had passed away six months earlier. We still had my son’s 13-year-old cat, and I was okay with being a one-pet family. My husband and son were not.

We were walking around PetSmart, with my husband getting ideas for our next dog, when he and my son went to the cat adoption area. I stayed away. But my son came and dragged me over, saying, “Mom, we have to get this cat. She looks so sad!”

I wanted to refuse, but then I saw her. She was lying against the back wall of the cage while all the other cats were active and greeting people. I had never seen a cat who actually looked depressed! Her paperwork said she was an owner surrender due to illness and had just turned one. So I caved, and we took her home.

Juno, a tortoiseshell cat with a white chest and paws, rests on a cushioned window seat in warm sunlight.

It took a while for her to warm up to us. It didn’t help that we got a dog a month later, another rescue! But now she is my husband’s baby girl. Every morning, she has to sit in his lap while he drinks his coffee. She waits for him on the couch and scolds him when he doesn’t sit down fast enough!

She is quite the talker. She’s not much of a spider or bug catcher, but she did catch a mouse, and she is quite the lovebug. She just turned five, and she drives me crazy sometimes. But what cat doesn’t?
